Kendall Art Gallery is a treasure in the Hill Country City of San Angelo, Texas. Located at 119 W 1st St, San Angelo, TX 76903, Kendall Art Gallery is one of only eight art galleries in the state of Texas and one of only seven operated by the Visual Arts Association of America (VAA). The VAA is a nonprofit organization that operates more than 1,000 arts centers across the country. These centers are designed to serve as community gathering places where people can enjoy art, learn about local artists, and buy original works. The Kendall Art Gallery was founded in 1956 by Kendall County Judge J.A. Kendall and his wife Emelda. When searching for a new home for their art collection after their Olde Towne home was demolished, Emebda suggested creating an art gallery on the grounds of their historic home at 210 South Maple Avenue. Today their collection features over 3,500 pieces dating from 1876 through current day, with a strong concentration on paintings produced during the early years of San Angelo’s oil boom (1880s-1910s).

Learning About San Angelo’s Oil Boom
San Angelo’s oil boom happened between 1887 and 1907 when big oil companies and entrepreneurs such as J.T. Hearne, E.L. Anderson, and Sid W. Richardson came to San Angelo. These men were successful entrepreneurs who created the foundation for the prosperity of San Angelo and the West Texas oil industry. Among these men was Sidney W. Richardson, who partnered with E.L. Anderson in a company that operated the first well of the Panhandle Oil Field. The city of San Angelo was founded in 1905, and the Panhandle Oil Field was discovered in 1901. Two years later, in 1903, W.G. Stewart and E.L. Anderson discovered the Texas City Field, which led to the development of the city of San Angelo.

 

Important Artists from the San Angelo Oil Boom
Frank W. Benson – Frank W. Benson (1876-1961) was a painter from San Angelo, Texas, who was best known for his heroic scenes of the West. A native of Nashville, Tennessee, Benson studied art for several years in New York City under notable artists Charles Spruegge and Frederick Friese. While in New York, Benson met fellow Texan William Merritt Chase. Benson returned to Texas in 1906, where he would live the rest of his life. He is most remembered for his paintings of cowboys, western scenes, and other subjects from the old west. Scottish American – Scottish American was a painter from San Angelo, Texas, who was best known for his scenes of the West. Born in Scotland in 1878, Scottish American studied at New York’s National Art School under Charles Spruegge and Frederick Friese. He moved to San Angelo with his family in 1904, where he would live the rest of his life. Scottish American was most noted for his oil paintings of cowboys and other subjects from the old west.
